Nitrogen in Wastewater and Its Role in Constraining On-site Planning

چکیده

The requirement to minimise the impact of domestic effluent on public and environmental health is an important component of best management practice for onsite wastewater management. The numerous guidelines prepared by state and local regulators recognise the importance of adequate distribution and assimilation of nitrogen from domestic wastewater. As this element is an essential microbial and plant nutrient there are many pathways for reducing it in the effluent while preventing its loss off-site. Many on-site wastewater management guidelines seem singularly driven by the need to prevent the assimilation of nitrogen on the basis of poor science, rather than its assimilation using best management practices and current research data. This paper reviews the current literature with respect to the nitrogen in domestic wastewater, the sources and possible pathways from product purchase through household use/consumption and the treatment train into the soil application area. Many of the sources of this element are from both the human diet and human metabolism and reduction at source is mostly unachievable. Reduction in other areas will be examined. The outcome of the review is to compare and contrast the disparity of views with regards to its significance in imposing unrealistically large areas for assimilation of nitrogen back into the environment. Is the concern about nitrogen based upon poor science or is the risk to human health justified?

Site selection for wastewater treatment plant using integrated fuzzy logic and multicriteria decision model: A case study in Kahak, Iran

One of the environmental issues in urban planning is finding a suitable site for constructing infrastructures such as water and wastewater treatment plants. There are numerous factors to be considered for this purpose, which make decision-making a complex task. We used an integrated fuzzy logic and multicriteria decision model to select a suitable site for establishing wastewater treatment plan...

Wastewater Treatment by Azolla Filiculoides: A Study on Color, Odor, COD, Nitrate, and Phosphate Removal

The aquatic fern Azolla, a small-leaf floating plant that lives in symbiosis with a nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria (Anabaena), is an outstanding plant, thanks to its high biomass productivity along with its tremendous rate per unit area for nitrogen-fixation.  The present study investigates the potential growth of Azolla in secondary effluents for removal of COD, phosphorus, and nitrogen. Resul...

Investigating the effect of Biodrof systems based on algae-bacterial biofilm for removing total Nitrogen, Phosphorus from domestic wastewater

Due to an increase of the human population on Earth, log of pollutants to water resources has increased and this caused the more restriction of water resources for human. Limited availability of fresh water resources, especially in the Middle East that have arid and semi-arid climate increases the importance of water recycling. The main problem in many conventional wastewater treatment systems ...

Anammox enrichment and constructed wetland inoculation for improvement of wastewater treatment performance

This study contributes to the improvement of low-cost biotechnology for wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs). Constructed wetlands are energy efficient engineered systems that mimic the treatment processes of natural wetlands, removing polluting organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens from water. The aim of this study was to investigate the advisability of the inoculation of hori...
